Abstract:
This paper presents an assessment of the archaeological contexts relating to the latest phases of steam heating in the guild dye-house in Krnov, compared with archival records. The basis for this study was the rescue archaeological research carried out between 2014 and 2017. The research confirmed the insertion of a steam boiler into the original service corridor leading to the older furnaces of the dye-house and the transition to steam heating of the dyeing operation. Around 1903, the entire interior of the dye-house was remodelled and a Tischbein-type steam boiler was installed. The dye house in Krnov thus represents a unique example of the transition from direct heating to indirect steam heating (industrialisation) within a dye works, as documented archaeologically in the Czech Republic.
