Research of High Middle Ages Lime Kilns in the South Part of the Moravian Karst in Consideration of Mokrá Village Region

Abstract:
The information about course and partial results of a rescue archaeological research of medieval lime kilns at Mokrá-Horákov Village in Mokrá quarry in consideration of their occurrence in Hostěnice, Ochoz, Brno-Líšeň, Březina and Kanice Villages constitute a topic of this contribution. The early rescue archaeological researches documenting activities associated with the traditional lime industry in the Moravian Karst are conducted by Archaeological Heritage Institute in Brno employees depending on lime mining for Mokrá cement works. Practically 20 lime kilns were examined in the forefield of the quarry within last twenty seasons; two of them could be certainly linked with the High Middle Ages, i. e. a period when the lime industry starts here its history. The contribution also evaluates results of a field survey associated with the localization of other large lime kilns and rectangular shaft heaps in the observed micro region and it tries to conduct a preliminary evaluation on comparative basis. The author also attempted to outline their typology.
