Abstract:
The archaeological exploration of the Jindřich Mine in Moravská Ostrava conducted in 2018 is the first comprehensive attempt to incorporate archaeological methods into the research and evaluation of the industrial heritage of the Ostrava-Karviná district. The unearthing, carried out in the form of test pits, was triggered by the planned reconstruction a hotel complex that was built on the site of the former mine in the 1980s. The placement of the test pits was based on the study of archival and iconographic sources, so as to cover the main parts of the mine and the associated production and processing facilities. The survey mostly confirmed the findings obtained through archival research and provided detailed information, particularly on the appearance of the building structures related to some of the technology equipment such as the mining machine and the ventilator fan. The construction details, everyday life and equipment of the mining area are also documented by movable finds.
