Abstract:
The aim of the paper is to present knowledge from long-term experiments in the reconstruction and functional analysis of medieval leather products. It also deals with manufacturing replicas of shoes and testing abrasion depending on the types of surfaces, and a subsequent comparison with historical sources as an attempt to gain a new insight into historical shoes. Part of the work includes familiarization with the details of a newly processed set of medieval leathers in Jáma in Nové Město pražské. Furthermore, terminology in the Czech language is introduced, as it is used among manufacturers and re-enactors of replicas for individual technological terms that do not yet have any relevant expressions in the Czech language. Last but not least, the paper aims to inform laymen and specialists of the current state of knowledge about leather and leather processing in the Middle Ages.
