Abstract:
In first half of 13th century the oldest towns in Czech lands are founded (Bruntál, Uničov). So far their founding was assumed to be associated with gold mining. As a result of confrontation of privileges, mineral resources in surroundings of those towns and their relative position it seems that a priority intention of founding Bruntál “on green turf” was rather a strategic position at the edge of a border wood. Therefore, it was not originally a mining town; however, a discovery of gold in the surroundings may also have had its role.
