Abstract:
Old bloomery iron smelting is rather rarely evidenced by finds of iron blooms processed by forging or obtained in good state of consolidation directly by reducing proces in bloomery furnaces. Several finds of notched blooms are known from Moravia, dating from the 9th century. This contribution aims to briefly summarize the basic facts about these artefacts and, eventually to initiate a discussion leading to the unified methodology of their description and research, enabling a shift in further research.
